Classes Music

What’s on our playlist?

One of my favorite things about having a Mini BREAKS dance class is being able to share the music I love with such an appreciative young audience. Most of the music I play each week does not play on the radio and some of the songs probably have never graced the eardrums of many of my students’ grown-ups.

If you’re at The Beacon studio during “Super Saturday,” “Soleful Sunday” or “Toddler Tuesday,” you might slide through various genres ranging from funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, pop, disco, electronic, R&B, house, etc. Songs that can be played unedited, like “Me, Myself and I” by De La Soul, “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, “Superbad” by James Brown, “I’m Good, I’m Gone” by Lykke Li, “Good Times” by Chic, or “Around The World” by Daft Punk to name a few.

Sometimes I edit songs to exclude a few words, or I use instrumentals, especially for the stretching or imagination portions of class. This is when I get to use a lot of fun R&B instrumentals (“Summertime” by Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff, “Bag Lady” by Erykah Badu, “American Boy” by Estelle, “Run to the Sun” by N.E.R.D.) as well as hip-hop ones (“How I Got Over” by The Roots, “Hip-hop” by Dead Prez, “Who Got The Props” by Black Moon.)

In the near future, I plan on getting together with some of my favorite DJ friends to create some fun, child-friendly breakin’ mixes to be available for all! I hope to get one out by the beginning of the new year. 🙂

Also, if you’re coming in tomorrow morning for “Toddler Tuesday,” we’ll be playing some ‘sun’ music in hopes of proving the weather report wrong.
